The history of the Mardi Gras King Cake is fascinating. Three hundred years ago, it was just a dry French bread twisted, sugared and with a bean hidden inside. It began as a traditional Christmas dessert to celebrate King's Day on January 6th, which commemorates the visit of the Magi to the newborn Jesus. The hiding of a bean inside comes from a Saturnalia, an ancient Roman festival to honor the god Saturn. Whoever finds the bean was made "king for the day".

In 1870, a troupe of French explorers brought the Mardi Gras King Cake to Louisiana. The official colors of the sugar are green to represent faith, purple for justice and of course, gold for power.
